Truly major international pageants are rare. New ones that catch on are even more rare. But Miss Earth is doing it. Beautiful women with titles that evoke the forces of nature are putting on crowns. Whoever thought of this is a genius.

Venezuela, known around the planet as a center of pageant excellence, is in on the act. And the girls are as beautiful as you might expect.

Marianne Puglia was crowned Miss Earth Venezuela 2006 (Sambil Model Venezuela 2006). Xenia Prieto was the first runner-up, and Dayana Colmenares was the second runner-up. Mariannys Caraballo was the third runner-up, and María Eugenia Romero was the fourth runner-up.

Ms. Puglia was Miss Press and Sambil Caracas winner. Ms. Caraballo was Sambil Margarita winner. Jennifer Maduro was Sambil Valencia winner, and Jennifer Schell was Sambil Maracaibo winner.

Miss Earth gets down to basics. The colors of the swimsuits are not too gaudy. They're primal, evoking the brown soil, the blue water, the cool green of the jungle.

But where are the flowers? In the suits.
