We met Ute Werner at a Venus Swimwear International Model Search in Florida. She looked like a Viking queen -- tall, golden-haired, voluptuous. And her name was pure German. We wondered if this exquisite creature could speak English. She could, and very naturally. "I'm a straight-up California girl, from San Diego," she said. "My father is from Germany."

OK, no Viking ship. Maybe a surfboard. But still, so breathtaking! And so polite. She wanted to be honest with PNB and let us know that she was "not really a pageant girl." She had competed in the state preliminary to Miss Teen USA, but hadn't found it to her taste. Later, somebody had coaxed her into swimwear competition, and she liked that better. But she wasn't part of the pageant world. She wondered if she was the kind of person we were looking for. In a word, yes.

Modeling in print, on television and on the Web keeps Ms. Werner busy these days. Her acting career is heating up, too. With no burning desire to be a contest girl, she may never get around to competing for a crown again. But we don't care. We're always looking for a girl like her. A girl like U.
