There's a shooting war in Europe. The Big Powers are baring their teeth at one another, and nations large and small are building up their arsenals.
But in Trinidad and Tobago, the world still seems a beautiful and peaceful place. Warm breezes, green hills, cheerful words in charming accents. And there are dozens of beautiful women, in all the diverse shades of humanity, competing for the title of Miss Universe.
The contrast has not been lost on the world's media. All are delighted to report that Miss USA and Miss Yugoslavia have become good friends, even though their respective nations are shedding blood over a patch of land called Kosovo.
Ana Karic, Miss Yugoslavia, is from Kosovo, the disputed province that officially is the cause of NATO's air war against her country. NATO sides with the province's ethnic Albanians, many of whom are now in refugee camps in Albania. Some of these refugee women will be competing for the Miss Albania title May 30, with the winner to advance to the Miss Europe Pageant. (There is no Miss Albania in the Miss Universe Pageant.)
