| In one of the more controversial international pageants of the 1990s, Brook Lee of the USA won the Miss Universe crown in Miami Beach on May 16, 1997. The first runner-up was Marena Bencomo, from the pageant powerhouse of Venezuela. The second runner-up was Margot Bourgeois of Trinidad and Tobago. Abbygale Arenas of the Philippines was Miss Photogenic (the second such honor in a row for her country), and Laura Csortan of Australia was Miss Congeniality. |

| The controversies that made the event so memorable were centered on the pageant's new co-owner, New York tycoon Donald Trump. The flamboyant Trump began the year by criticizing the reigning Miss Universe, Alicia Machado of Venezuela, for gaining weight. Then, as final preparations for the pageant were beginning,Trump announced the breakup of his marriage to former beauty queen Marla Maples. To complicate the situation, Ms. Maples was the co-host of the pageant. During the first two weeks of May in Miami Beach, rumors swirled around the upcoming competition. In most cases they were "spun" skillfully by Trump's publicity operatives, and many appeared to originate inside the pageant headquarters itself. Trump's alleged mistress was supposedly sighted on the beach. Trump's reported efforts to lure Cuba back into the Miss Universe fold were criticized in the Cuban exile community --- and not quite denied by pageant officials. The perpetually smiling tycoon was even linked romantically to Ms. Machado, his public adversary. |
| For hardcore pageant fans, there were more serious concerns. This was an international contest with major chunks of the world unrepresented. No Miss Britain, no Miss Japan, no Miss Guam, no Miss Austria, no Miss Norway. . . Critics complained that the pageant was becoming more American, less international, bearing the unmistakable stamp of its owner. | ![]()

| On the night of the finals, jokes about Trump's marital problems (clearly approved by him) were part of the banter, and the spotlight was frequently on his delighted countenance. Never before had an owner played such a role in so important a pageant. But never before had Miss Universe been run by anyone like Donald Trump. In a bizarre postscript, authorities later learned that enigmatic murder suspect Andrew Cunanan was taking up residence in Miami Beach as the Miss Universe Pageant was being held. Two months later, Cunanan, who enjoyed glamorous surroundings, would allegedly murder famed designer Gianni Versace nearby and go on to kill himself. Was he in the crowds that sought glimpses of the contestants? Was he in the audience the night Brook Lee was crowned? Of course, there are some people who will swear that they sat beside him, but we will probably never know the truth. Alicia Machado did not want to be remembered as the Miss Universe who was overweight. And indeed, history suggests that she was partly a victim of changing tastes. Many of the early Miss Universes, while certainly beautiful, would look heavy on a pageant stage of the 1990s. Thinner women are now in vogue, and the English word "buxom," which was once a compliment to a woman's figure, is now rarely used. |
