Midori Thompson

Midori Thompson is a Southern beauty with a Japanese heritage. (The name "Midori" means green.) Her father teaches martial arts and her mother teaches modeling, and she is superb at both. Because of a shift in the dates of her state pageant, her reign will be one of the shortest of any of the Miss Teen USA competitors, but she has already gained a huge following in Georgia.

Elizabeth Barchas of Idaho and Dawn Carrow of Vermont were roommates. PNB tipped them off in advance about the pronunciation of each other's names. (Barchas is pronounced "Barkas," and Carrow rhymes with "Thoreau."). Ms. Barchas rehearses at right (center).

Chartese Day

Chartese Day of the District of Columbia played a congressional aide in a movie when she was only 14 years old. Today, at 18, she is a congressional aide on Capitol Hill. (Her name is pronounced like "Shar TEESS.")

Gina DeBernardi of Rock Springs, Wyo., got a taste of glamour and glitz in Shreveport. But she ain't seen nothin' yet! She's getting ready to head for college in Las Vegas.

Amber Lancaster

Amber Lancaster of Washington state was a pageant novice when she saw the phone number on the screen at the end of the 1997 Miss Teen USA Pageant. She called, she entered, she won. At left, she's riding high in the pink suit.

Katee Doland, Miss Colorado Teen USA, endeared herself to millions as she made the top 10. Football fans will get to see her again this fall, if they will just keep their eyes on the sidelines. She's the youngest member of the Denver Broncos cheerleading squad.

Kristy Kay Stover

Kristy Kay Stover of Arizona came to cheer at the Miss USA Pageant in March, and she came to compete at the Miss Teen USA Pageant in August. This fourth-generation desert girl could almost call Shreveport a second home. PNB thanks her for her graciousness at both events.

Some of Christie Cole's relatives were wondering how PNB knew so much about her. Folks, she's the talk of  Texas. (And all the talk we've heard is good.)

Alita Dawson, the newly crowned Miss Teen All American, competed in last year's Miss Teen USA Pageant, representing Connecticut. When she heard that this year's pageant would be shown on tape delay, she was determined that she wouldn't know the winner in advance. She isolated herself from all news for 24 hours. She did talk to a PNB reporter during that time, but only on condition that he not reveal who the winner was. He kept his word (though it was tough).
