Some people and events we won't forget about this year's pageant

The girls arrived in Shreveport in the middle of a deadly drought and heat wave. Outdoor activities had to be curtailed. While they were in town, the heat abated and rains finally arrived.

Good show

PNB wishes to thank Miss Universe Inc. and Rubenstein Public Relations for their kind cooperation during the Miss Teen USA Pageant. Aryn Lieberman and Brandee Schwalb in particular were indefatigable, unflappable, just plain nice. Their help in our preparations and in the credentialing process was invaluable.

We are also thankful for the help of numerous Miss Teen USA state directors, mothers, fathers, friends and the occasional well-meaning "spy." We are grateful to our fans for pouncing on our every mistake. Correction is the route to perfection.

Finally, we thank the 51 contestants who gave us something to write about. Stay in touch, young ladies. You've only just begun.

Joan Lucas of Arkansas won PNB's unofficial Persistence Award. She won her state title by competing on a broken foot -- and wearing 4-inch heels. She said she would do it "12 times over." (Joan is pronounced like "Jo Ann.")

Dawn Carrow

Dawn Carrow of Vermont recovered from eating disorders and says pageants helped her do it. She now speaks to other young people about the problem.

Jennifer Reel of Mississippi, a devout Baptist whose goal is missionary work, saw the pageant as a way to witness for her faith. At first, she didn't realize what a big event it was.

Maggie Stoker

Maggie Stoker, an experienced surfer even though she's from Montana, snapped some behind-the-scenes photos for PNB. She's used to the hoopla Her father is a Hollywood actor.

Melissa Dungao (center at right) was a show-stealer with her moves during the opening number. She wants to do some serious traveling, so the folks back home in New Jersey should congratulate her while they have the chance.

Nicole Broderick

Nicole Broderick was the third Floridian in a row to win Miss Photogenic at Miss Teen USA. This beach model is also a track-and-field star who wants to market athletic equipment.
