Saying goodbye at home

Christie Lee Woods was the first Texan to reign as Miss Teen USA. She was crowned in August 1996 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Unlike some other contemporary queens in the Miss Universe system, she has been involved in no controversies.Whether this is a relief or a disappointment to the publicity machine at Trump Pageants is unknown.

Adult contemporary

"But it doesn't look like a teenage pageant," was the comment heard in some corners when Miss Teen USA made its debut in 1983. Up to that time, most teenage pageants were very much in the Miss America mold, stressing talent, good deeds and even good grades. Most downplayed swimsuit competition, and some had no swimsuit competition at all.

Such conservatism had long been considered good business sense. An emphasis on wholesomeness, not on glamour, was supposed to appeal to parents, and parents had the final say in whether a girl would participate.

Miss Teen USA changed all that. Its contestants were expected to take the swimsuit competition seriously. Some wore two-piece swimsuits. Every effort was made to present Miss Teen USA as the younger equivalent of Miss USA. It was even announced that the new teen queen, if she met age requirements, would compete for the Miss USA crown. (This policy was soon dropped.)

Today, Miss Teen USA is one of America's most popular contests, and some other teenage pageants have adopted a more glamour-oriented style. But "traditional" teenage pageants remain very strong as well.
