| Tennessee takes it all Shelly Moore, 18, representing Tennessee, won the Miss Teen USA Pageant on Aug. 20, 1997, at South Padre Island, Texas. The first runner-up was Autumn Waterbury, 18, of Illinois, and the second runner-up was Mahana Kaahumanu Walters, 17, of Hawaii. The three other finalists were Alison Burr of North Carolina, Amanda Rochelle Penix of Oklahoma and Mariah Leanne Bergmann of Kansas. Other semifinalists were Amanda Aardsma of Colorado, Jessica Gregory of Massachusetts, Julie Nagle of North Dakota and Kimberly Grigsby of Virginia. Christina Todd of Ohio was named Miss Congeniality, and Cristin Duren of Florida was Miss Photogenic. Miss Teen USA is more glamour-oriented than most teen pageants, but 1997 was a year in which self-described "tomboys" were everywhere. Arizona's Julie Gulbrandsen was a scorpion hunter, Connecticut's Alita Dawson was a former football player and South Carolina's Caroline Brigman had played baseball and taught gun safety. Montana's Coty Strickler had once bloodied another girl's nose in a boxing match. Still, it was a friendly competition, and the contestants said goodbye to one another with sincere affection. Some of them may yet face off again -- perhaps in the Miss USA Pageant. |
