A beauty revisited -- New York

"Do you know A-Rod?" asks Catherine Muldoon, as if she were talking about a guy across the street. Wow, New York is a great place to be a beauty queen! She's been to movie premieres, charity balls where everybody is famous, and photo shoots where everything is perfectly glamorous.

And she's completely unspoiled. Ms. Muldoon was the first member of this year's Miss Teen USA class to have a PNB pictorial. And all year, she has been among the friendliest and most accessible in the bunch. She's making new friends, but she never forgets the old ones

Is that a hint of Georgia mint in her voice? Yes, she has family below the Mason-Dixon Line, and she has even competed there. She's what folks call Southern sweet and New York cool. That's been said about some of the most glamorous women who ever lived.

New York is at her feet, and she wants to be . . . a dentist. She knows a lot about dentistry already, and she's a hard worker. She'll be the best. But she should be a movie star first, we think. There will always be plenty of teeth in the world.

Georgia gem

Brooke Calhoun has a fascinating look, never quite the same in any two pictures.

She can seem younger than her age, innocent and playful like your kid sister. Or she can seem a sultry woman of mystery, who can knock you over by batting her eyes, the way Lauren Bacall did to Bogie

And sometimes she's right in the middle, with that blond peekaboo bang that reminds us of plucky Veronica Lake.

Film goddesses. She's like several of them. But always Brooke. What a look!

A beauty revisited -- Colorado

In the interest of full disclosure, we need to say that Tori Carter is a sometime PNB reporter. She covered the 2003 Miss USA Pageant for us. Who knew she would be where she is today?

Well, we suspected. She was so beautiful doing interviews that an informal group of reporters voted her "best legs in the press corps." But the Miss USA girls were not jealous. No, not one little bit.

Ms. Carter keeps those legs in shape with cross-country running, and she's a well-known inline skater, too. She's the essence of Colorado, beautiful but hardy, like a tall pine that stands magnificently in sun and snow.

It's mostly sun these days. She's a student in a very famous university in Los Angeles. "It's a culture shock," she says of being away from Colorado much of the time, "but I'm in my element." She wants a career in movie-making and movie-reviewing.

Behind the camera? Oh no, please!

The best job

Katie Elizabeth Schull of South Dakota is a Christian, and she hopes someday to be a missionary. (But first, she would like to be Miss Teen USA.)

We mention her faith first because it is the most important thing in her life. She's not sanctimonious or pushy about it. She doesn't use to it to make points in the pageant world or anywhere else. But if you ask her about what's important to her, she will tell you the truth. And we admire that.

Can a girl with her values be glamorous? The answer is obviously yes. Can she be fun? Absolutely. Ms. Schull has come to love the whole pageant scene, and she's glad she took a chance on it. "A friend talked me into it, and I set a challenge for myself." She has already more than risen to the challenge.

When PNB asked her if she had ever thought about being in show business, Ms. Schull said sure, if something like that ever came her way. And she mentioned some show business personalities whose strong beliefs she admires. Mind you, she didn't mention anybody whose beliefs she doesn't admire. She doesn't think that way.

She looks like a Latin beauty to us, which may be sheer coincidence, but she's studying Spanish and hoping someday to do mission work in a Spanish-speaking country.

And if she should ever find herself in Hollywood, she would make it a better place.
