Miss Tennessee Teen USA
A gentle climb

Alicia Selby is a model who lives on a mountain.

"It's just a small mountain," she's quick to point out, because Tennessee girls are not given to bragging. But the view sounds grand. "From the top, you can see the beginning of the Cumberland Plateau."

Alicia SelbyThat's what we like -- a beauty queen who's up on her geography. She not only recognizes a plateau when she sees one, she knows its name.

Speaking of geography, Ms. Selby became a Tennessee pageant star partly because of a trip she made to nearby Georgia.
More than two years, she got seriously into modeling, which meant frequent travel around the South. (A girl doesn't get many gigs on the Cumberland Plateau.)

On one trip to Atlanta, Ms. Selby met famous dress designer Sherry Hill, and went on do some work for her. Through Ms. Hill, she met Kim Greenwood, director of Miss Georgia Teen USA and Miss Tennessee Teen USA. That gave the young model an idea, and you know the rest.

Alicia Selby
Alicia SelbyMs. Selby has a passion, one she loves to talk about. It's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," the TV show about a teenage girl fighting the forces of evil. Ms. Selby is one of its most ardent fans. "When 'Buffy' is on, Alicia is not there," she says.

One of these days, Ms. Selby plans to do another disappearing act, and it won't be for just an hour of prime time. Her ambition is to slip out of the fashion limelight and work "behind the scenes" as a designer.
But for now, she's a model and beauty queen, right out front where we can see her. And we're loving it.

"Do you take this crown?"

Jacqueline Bruno is the loveliest bride you ever saw. She should be, considering how much practice she's had. "I've been in wedding gowns since I was 13," says this cheerful charmer from Massachusetts.

No, she's not married, she's a model. In an industry that's notoriously fickle, she has stayed busy all through her teens, working the runways and smiling for the camera. She was Seventeen-Macy's Prom Model of the Year not so long ago. She's also a cover girl on grace ormonde Wedding Style Magazine.

Jacqueline BrunoYou might think that a girl like her would breeze into beauty contests without a care. But Ms. Bruno started out as nervous as anybody else. Her proudest moment in pageants, she says, was not when she won her state crown. It was the year when she finished as first runner-up. She knew she could compete, and it felt good.

Maybe competitiveness is in her genes. Her father was an All-American shot putter. And since she has three sisters, we suspect there was some good-natured sibling rivalry when she was younger, though she obviously adores her family. "It's a conservative version of the Osbournes," she says of the Bruno household.Jacqueline Bruno
Jacqueline BrunoMs. Bruno, who answers to either "Jacqueline" or "Jackie," is a sophomore in college, studying journalism. She has already done some field work in both newspapers and broadcasting. "I understand deadlines," she says (which is more than can be said for some veteran journalists). Her dream job happens to belong to Katie Couric at the moment, but she's patient.
This is a well-grounded queen. She has seen and done a lot of interesting things, and on the magazine cover she looks like a lady with the world by the tail. But she reminded us that she still has a lot of growing up to do. She's very mature about being immature.

"We're not adults," she said of teen beauty queens. "At least I'm not. There are a lot of things I can't do. And I laugh after I talk, just like a girl."

She did laugh. And what an enchanting laugh it was!

Kicking and beautifying

Krisi Ann Nash is a striker.

No, we don't mean she's going to carry a picket sign at the Miss Teen USA Pageant. We're talking soccer. A "striker" is a player who is always a threat to score goals, and that describes Ms. Nash, who is one of the best high school soccer players in Mississippi. She will be attending college on a soccer scholarship.

Krisi Ann NashShe admits she didn't even like the sport at the beginning. She started out competing mostly against boys. Recently, though, more girls have taken the field.
She has been competing in pageants for only two years, but says, "I've been interested all my life."

Though many teen queens are self-described tomboys, Ms. Nash, for all her athletic prowess, calls herself strictly a "girlie girl." She loves doing her friends' hair.

Krisi Ann Nash
Krisi Ann NashWhen it comes to career goals, glamour wins out over athletics. Ms. Nash wants to be a makeup artist, working with runway models and even doing "special effects" cosmetics. As a pageant star, she should meet a lot of potential clients.

And if personal beauty is an advertisement in the makeup business, Ms. Nash will be a roaring success.

Fans of old movies have noted her resemblance to another raven-haired Southerner, Ava Gardner. We think Ms. Nash looks like a female counterpart of the early Elvis. He was actually born in her part of Mississippi, but we're not trying to start any rumors.

Wait. Maybe "striker" just means she's striking. That would fit, wouldn't it?
