Scenes from 2000

The long-awaited "millennium" year has gone by, without the excitement that many had predicted. The world didn't end, and civilization didn't collapse. Sorry.

But things weren't totally uneventful. There were still pageants being held, there were still beauty queens blossoming. And that great invention of the old millennium, the camera, was there to record the spectacle. In the hands of the legendary Joe Whiteko and other pageant photographers, it can be as magnificent as a Stradivarius.

Colombian-born Jacqueline Jauregui is the first Miss Atlanta to have a Hispanic heritage.

Here's a snapshot from a "historic" slumber party in 2000. It's Jamie Kern's last night of freedom before she became a member of the "Big Brother" cast. Ms. Kern (second from left) was Miss Washington USA at the time. Her predecessors as Miss Washington USA, Natasha Vantramp (center) and Tammy Jansen (second from right) were among the friends giving her moral support and a few laughs.

Carrie Colvin was recently chosen Alabama's Junior Miss. Her state is the home of the Junior Miss system.
