A stunner |
Some people say "Resaca Beach" is a small strip of sand on the bank of a mountain river. Some people say it's not a real place at all, just a joke somebody made up in a sleepy Southern town far from the sea. But for Jennifer Corliss of Cumming, Ga., a nationally known swimsuit model, Resaca Beach was always known as Hard Luck City.

Half a dozen times, throughout the 1990s, the dazzling Georgia blonde competed to be Miss Resaca Beach. Each time, she wound up as a finalist, but never as the winner. She captured her share of other crowns during that time. She was Miss U.S. Hawaiian Tropic, Ms. Hit the Beach!, even Miss Super Bowl. But at the Resaca Beach Poster Girl Contest, in her own back yard, she always came up short. On a sultry June night in 2000, Ms. Corliss gave it one last try. In front of a high-spirited crowd in Dalton, Ga., she faced off against 17 other beauties, vying for big money and bikini bragging rights. And she won. The girl who wouldn't give up became the girl who couldn't be stopped.
It was a moist-eyed moment for the usually unflappable Ms. Corliss. She kept the crown on her head long after the pageant was over, long after she had changed from her bikini into street clothes and headed into the steamy Georgia night. The first runner-up was Alicia Hall of Jonesboro, Ga., who has known frustrating moments of her own. Ms. Hall was first runner-up to Miss Georgia USA in 1998 and 1999. Proud of her Resaca Beach showing, but understandably a bit disappointed, she vowed to continue her quest for the Miss USA crown.
The second runner-up was Kimberly Starr of Huntsville, Ala., and the third runner-up was Capri Hodge of Steele, Ala. The fourth runner-up was Melissa Collins of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and the fifth runner-up was Nicole Gauthier of Brentwood, Tenn. Ms. Gautier and Ms. Hodge were chosen to compete at the Summer Savage finals in Knoxville, Tenn., in August 2000. Ms. Hall and Ms. Hodge were picked to compete for Ms. Hit the Beach! PNB was out in force in Dalton, with veteran photographer Joe Whiteko showing the ropes to intern Amber Irene Dyer. From the first tinkling of glasses at the pre-pageant party, to the last emotional farewells between contestants, Whiteko and Ms. Dyer captured the images that made Resaca Beach an unforgettable affair.
