Still a safe bet

PNB told you a couple of years ago about Rachel Altiere, the "bodacious bridesmaid" of the pageant world. She kept coming so close to the top, then falling just a wee bit short.

There was no doubt in our minds about Ms. Altiere's destiny. We told you this girl was going to make it big in pageants, very big. Count on it, we said. "Sooner or later," we said.

OK, so it's "later." But it's not late. Ms. Altiere is still young enough to do everything we predicted, to be the beauty queen of beauty queens. And she gets better-looking by the hour.

So are we standing by our prediction? Yes and no.

Maybe Ms. Altiere will win the big one soon, but now we realize that she doesn't need to do that. If she never competes for a crown again, she's still on her way to stardom.

She's a model, you see. And have you ever seen a more sublime model? She's the kind of girl a guy wants to take to a class reunion, just so he can feel the envy in the air.

She's the kind of girl whose face on a magazine cover will make a star-struck young ingénue dream of a better life. She's the kind of girl you want to see on TV, even if she's chatting with a really cheesy talk show host.

Prediction refined: Rachel Altiere will be the queen of pageants, or the supermodel of our age. It's really up to her.
