The world's eyes were trained on Pakistan in the last few months of 2001. With the Afghan war raging next door, Pakistan became a window on the biggest news story of the young millennium.

At the same time, something else of significance was taking place in this fascinating country. It was being drawn slowly back into the pageant world.

It was announced that the "Miss Pakistan University 2002" Pageant would be held in March 2002, and that Pakistanis were hoping to place contestants in various international competitions in coming years.

And despite the preoccupations of a regional war, Pakistani beauticians and models traveled to Bangkok to demonstrate their skills in the Hair Asia Pacific 2001 event.

Though pageantry has been dormant in Pakistan for the past couple of years, the nation has much to offer. As proof, we present the country's most recent standard-bearer, Iman Ali, Miss Pakistan 1999.

Every nation, every people, must make its own decision about its role in the beauty culture. Some may choose no role at all. But if Pakistan takes the pageant path, you will never hear us complain.
