| Nigeria is by far the most populous nation in Africa, and with its oil wealth, it stands to become one of the most influential nations on earth. In late summer 2000, U.S. President Bill Clinton recognized Nigeria's importance by making a major state visit. |
![]() | Just as final preparations for Clinton's visit were being made, an extraordinary event highlighted the growing cultural ties between the two countries. Women from throughout the United States came together to compete for the crown of Miss Nigeria USA. The winner was Njideka "Jiji" Ugwuegbu, 25, of Kirkland, Wash., originally of Imo State. She competed as Miss Acts Rehabilitation.

| The first runner-up was Vivian Onuoha, 20, of Boston, also originally from Imo State. She competed as Miss Home Access. The second runner-up was Amarachukwu Okoroafor, 23, of Washington, D.C., originally of Abia State. She competed as Miss NRC. Miss Congeniality was Ucheehukwu "Uche" Ezekwueche, 23, of Macon, Ga., originally of Anambra State. She competed as Miss CAV. | ![]() |
| These names may still sound exotic and difficult to most American ears, but Greek and Italian names once had the same disconcerting effect. America is growing more diverse, and the Nigerian community is becoming an integral part of American life. |
![]() | This is one social change that everyone should welcome, and it's especially pleasant when beauty queens lead the way. |
