It was announced on March 29, 2007, that the cable channel CMT had dropped its deal to telecast the Miss America Pageant. The venerable pageant had been on the channel for two years, after losing its network TV contract in 2004. The pageant, traditionally held in Atlantic City, N.J., in September, was a powerhouse of American television for almost 50 years. But it showed a steepening decline in TV ratings in the 1990s and after as viewers complained that it was too dull. When it lost the network contract, it moved from Atlantic City to Las Vegas and from September to January, but that failed to address the problem. PNB's coverage of Miss America in 2007 warned that it was in trouble again, just as a PNB editorial had sounded the alarm just before the network contract vanished in late 2004. Coincidentally, on the same day as the news of Miss America's misfortune, the Miss Universe organization confirmed that Miss Universe and Miss USA would continue to appear on NBC through 2011. The announcement was not a surprise, since NBC is the co-owner of Miss Universe. But it showed the relative fortunes of Miss America and Miss USA. Miss America, once dominant, has slipped far below its "sexier" rival.
