After viewing the photos in 2002, pageant officials persuaded Ms. Revels to give up her newly won crown of Miss North Carolina, along with her chance to compete at Miss America. She soon reconsidered and fought the decision, even traveling to Atlantic City during the Miss America Pageant and trying to assert a right to compete. Ivette Santa Maria, 22, a Miss Peru America contestant, said she refused Bongo's advances and left the presidential palace without interference. But she said was left penniless and stranded for days in the country, which is best known for its oil wealth and biological diversity. She denied earlier reports that she had been held prisoner or that attempts were made to force her to have sex or work as a prostitute. Ms. Santa Maria said Gabonese officials told her the incident was a "misunderstanding." There have been previous reports that European agencies import prostitutes to Gabon for Bongo. This incident recalls the allegations by Shannon Marketic, Miss USA 1992, that she was lured to the oil-rich Asian nation of Brunei in 1997, and that top officials tried to pressure her to have sex. Media investigations confirmed that many models and beauty queens went to the country to make money in the high-end sex trade. But the allegations of coercion and fraud were never substantiated.
