The Miss America Pageant on Sept. 22, 2001, showed improved TV ratings over the previous year, helping ABC to beat out rival networks for the night. This reversed a recent trend of declining TV viewership for the pageant. Though the pageant's preliminary activities drew little media attention because of terrorism coverage, the decision not to cancel the contest was widely publicized as a symbol of normalcy. And a decline in travel and nightlife may have left more people in their homes to watch television. The fact that ratings actually increased after the first hour could be an indication that many people did not realize it was a 3-hour program, and therefore were not habitual viewers.

In a fairly standard pageant with a Cinderella theme, American women competed to be the date of a European "mystery prince." In the end, the prince, who was identified as Prince Guglielmo Marconi Giovanelli of Rome, chose Ms. Gulla as the winner by adorning her with a pricey necklace. She gets to keep the necklace.
