Let the dragon purr

China is the most populous nation on earth, and its unique culture is as ancient as the good earth. But Chinese pageant history began very recently.

Amy Yan, the newly crowned Miss International China 2002, will be the first Chinese representative to compete at Miss International.

Ms. Yan, 21, hopes to go at least as far as Ling Zhuo, China's first representative at Miss Universe. Ms. Zhuo finished as second runner-up in 2002.

You weren't around when the Great Wall was going up. You missed Marco Polo. The Ming Dynasty and the Boxer Rebellion were way before your time. But now you're seeing Chinese history being made.

That's what we call good fortune.
