People in the United States are feeling a new surge of solidarity. Their vast country has been hurled into the front lines in the war on terrorism, drawing the support and sympathy of governments around the globe.

PNB is a nonpartisan, nonpolitical, nonsectarian, nonconformist outfit. Some of our staffers are war veterans, some are veterans of peace protests. But all our reporters are patriots in the best sense of the word, and some are now risking their lives covering the war.

To them, and to the millions of men and women doing their duty to secure a better world, we offer a heartfelt salute.

Of course, a mere hand salute wouldn't do. Only a great pair of legs can express our gratitude sufficiently. Kelly Wells -- front and center!

Ms. Wells is a student of business administration who has been modeling for seven years. She's a believer in free enterprise and has an all-American sense of fun.

Just as buxom Betty Grable became the pinup for U.S. troops during World War II, we predict that the winsome Ms. Wells will become the pinup for today's American forces.

These very pictures may soon adorn the lockers of lonely GIs around the world. If you have a lad in the service, just ask his opinion.

Pageant fans will surely know that Ms. Wells has been competing in the Miss America system for several years. She has reached the state level three times, but has never finished as a finalist. You may be asking why this flawless female hasn't won the Miss America crown already. Please don't speculate. With an international crisis upon us, this is no time to question the decisions of people in authority. We must all stick together.

But when the war is over, we will be demanding an explanation.
