Raquel Fournier, Mrs. France-World, lives in a cozy home outside Paris. Way outside Paris. In Southern California.

There's nothing odd about that. The French are the most worldly of people. And Mrs. Fournier has deep roots in the Old Country, with a father who hails from France and a mother who was born in Spain's Canary Islands.

So unless you're gauche (that's a French word), you won't hold it against Mrs. Fournier that she grew up in Venezuela. It's a wonderful place to learn about pageants, and she learned her lessons beautifully.

In L.A., where she lives with her Colombian-born husband, she is starting to make her mark as a model and actress. And pageants may not have heard the last of her, either.

The saying goes that French food, French wine and French wisdom are the finest in the world. Since Mrs. Fournier had no food or wine with her, we asked her for a morsel of wisdom. She didn't disappoint us. "Silence is the universal language," she said.

We just nodded.
