Everything suits her

Erika Valdez grew up in Key West, where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean, where the USA meets the blue horizon. It's a tourist mecca, a literary landmark, an almost legendary place. But it's also a small town where a girl can be successful if she works hard. Ms. Valdez was both homecoming queen and student body president at Key West High School.

Nowadays, she lives in Tallahassee, and she's studying at the University of Florida, planning for a career in law. But her pageant career is already in full swing.

In September 1999, she competed in the Venus Swimwear International Model Search in Jacksonville. In December, she was a contestant at Miss Millennium World in Singapore. She's preparing to compete for Miss Florida USA.

The first pageant outfit that Ms. Valdez ever wore was bought for a dollar at a garage sale. (She was just a kid at the time.) Now, spectacular clothes are her trademark. She won the futurewear category in Singapore with an indescribably offbeat space age costume.

There was one dress that she did not get to wear onstage in Singapore. It was considered too revealing, even though it showed less flesh than many bikinis.

Pictures of the future suit and the "revealing" dress are included on this page. If you can't guess which is which, you were probably never student body president. (Or if you were, we hope you went to a very small school.)
