No, you mustn't!I'm not a fanatic about rules. You should never be afraid to break a "rule" if that makes you a better pageant contestant. But there really are some things you just don't do (or wear) when you're trying to become a beauty queen. Here are a few definite "no-nos" from Dana: - No gum.
Never chew during pageant competition, whether you're onstage or not. There's nothing morally wrong with gum-chewing, but it is a very casual activity. If you ever look at a group of people and one of them is chewing gum, that person will stand out, and not in a favorable way. It's just not "classy," not dignified. When there are people around who will judge you, don't chew.
- Don't tint your tongue.
This happens more than you might think. Without gum to use as a breath freshener, some women use candies or mints that can discolor the tongue. Such a tongue can be distracting to someone who is watching you, and with cameras poking at you from every direction, the inside of your mouth may be glimpsed by lots of people. Choose your breath products with care, test them, and settle on one that works and won't otherwise be noticed.
- No necklaces.
Go sparingly with jewelry in general when you're appearing onstage, especially when you're in a swimsuit. Earrings are a must, and a wedding ring if you have one, but otherwise avoid the baubles. Watches and bracelets are less distracting than necklaces, but generally you can do without them.
- Nothing that looks odd or unhygienic.
If you have tattoos, cover them. (I know that some women break this rule, and maybe it will be outdated in 20 years, but for now avoid the body art.) If you have parts of your body pierced other than your ears, don't call attention to that fact by wearing rings under your swimsuit. In fact, don't wear anything that is noticeable under your swimsuit (anything that isn't noticeable is fine).
- No wigs, hair extensions or barrettes.
There! Five rules shouldn't be too heavy a burden, and you don't even have to obey them. But if you disobey them, please don't let me find out! And did you notice what all these forbidden things have in common? They distract from you, and I want you to be the center of attention. Love, Dana
