The pleasant truth |
|
| It's 2001, and reality is all the rage. Scripted stories are out, spontaneity is in. Don't tell it the way somebody wants it to be told. Tell it the way it is. So now is the time to explode the myths about Miss America contestants and give you a dose of reality, in the person of Ashley Huff. She's Miss Nevada, and she's very real. She's also more appealing than the mythical Misses you have heard of. Myth No. 1: Miss America contestants are loyalists who never get involved with other pageant systems. Reality: Ms. Huff freely acknowledges that she has tried other competitions. Just a few weeks before stepping onto the Miss America stage, she was intently watching the Miss Teen USA Pageant, in which her sister Emily once competed. |

| Myth No. 2: Girls go to Atlantic City and learn about what life is like in other states. Reality: Ms. Huff already knows about other states besides Nevada. "I've lived everywhere," says the UNLV student. Her former addresses span six time zones. Myth No. 3: Miss America contestants never have any doubts about the big competition. Reality: Ms. Huff admits she was anxious before she started meeting her fellow contestants. Fortunately, she says, "everybody was down to earth. Much better than I expected." Myth No. 4: Really beautiful girls never win at Miss America. Reality: Somebody is going to prove that idea wrong. Maybe it will be Ashley Huff. |
