If beauty pageants didn't exist, Ashley Buckman would be a good reason to invent them. She's everything a beauty queen should be -- gorgeous, smart, sweet.

She started in pageants when she was 9 months old, "and I've been hooked ever since." She first gained regional recognition when she won the Miss Junior Deep South title. But then she was crowned Miss Mississippi Teen USA, and now the whole country is starting to take notice.

Ms. Buckman has an attitude that's positively inspiring. "I don't get discouraged when something doesn't go my way," she says. "I don't mind constructive criticism. That's all a pageant is."

But she has normal teenager's sense of fun. She enjoys cheerleading, "singing anything that's fast and loud," and shopping. "My boyfriend's mother owns a store," she says gleefully.

Ashley Buckman always strives to be No. 1, but there's one way she would like to be second. She would like to be the second girl from Mississippi to win the Miss Teen USA title.
